Turn Semrush keyword gaps into a content plan

Filter competitor gaps by business relevance and intent before turning external research into briefs, drafts and measurable experiments.

The short answer

A keyword gap shows a difference between domains in a research dataset. It does not automatically show a topic you should publish. Competitors may serve different audiences, sell different products or rank with a format you cannot credibly provide.

A gap is an input, not an instruction

A keyword gap shows a difference between domains in a research dataset. It does not automatically show a topic you should publish. Competitors may serve different audiences, sell different products or rank with a format you cannot credibly provide.

Start with a small set of genuinely relevant competitors. Record the country database and source date. Keyword volume and difficulty should refer to the same keyword and market. Unknown values must stay unknown.

Prioritize by usefulness

Filter out irrelevant terms and group remaining queries by reader task. Inspect current results for the important groups. A useful brief explains how the page will add value and where the business can offer a legitimate next step.

Do not describe low search volume as low competition. Difficulty is an estimate, not a ranking prediction. Broad terms may be valuable but competitive; smaller specific tasks may better match your expertise and product.

Move research into the workspace

Semrush Hub is an included Editor module for keyword gaps and authority snapshots. Its intended audience in the catalog is Semrush subscribers. Editor inclusion should not be interpreted as a promise that an external Semrush subscription is included.

Combine gap evidence with Competitor Benchmark and your own customer knowledge. Write one strong page per distinct intent, link it to the appropriate topic and evaluate the result with consistent measurements.

A practical workflow

  1. 1

Select comparable competitors and the relevant market database.

  2. 2

Remove queries unrelated to your audience and offer.

  3. 3

Group by intent and inspect current ranking formats.

  4. 4

Create briefs with evidence, differentiation and a measurable next step.

A worked example

A competitor ranking for “free PDF converter” does not create a useful SEO opportunity for a content editor unless conversion is part of the actual product and audience. A gap about refreshing SEO articles is a more natural fit when your modules support that workflow.

Illustrative example, not a customer result.

Before you publish

  • Competitors are relevant to the audience.
  • Country and data source are recorded.
  • Volume and difficulty are not mixed across markets.
  • External-service access is not promised by an Editor plan.

Common questions

Does Editor inclusion include a Semrush subscription?

Do not assume so. Semrush Hub is an Editor module aimed at Semrush subscribers; external-service access is separate from module inclusion.

Should I publish every competitor keyword?

No. Prioritize relevant intent, credible expertise and a useful product connection.
