Build an SEO and GEO topic cluster that earns its place

Connect a useful pillar page to distinct supporting answers, with contextual links and a clear path from learning to action.

The short answer

A topic cluster is a group of related pages organized around a shared subject. A pillar introduces the subject and helps visitors find detailed answers. Supporting pages should solve distinct problems, not rephrase the same keyword into multiple URLs.

Map tasks, not endless variations

A topic cluster is a group of related pages organized around a shared subject. A pillar introduces the subject and helps visitors find detailed answers. Supporting pages should solve distinct problems, not rephrase the same keyword into multiple URLs.

Start with a scope your team can maintain. For content optimization, useful supporting tasks include research, auditing an existing page, refreshing outdated evidence and measuring the result. Give each task one primary page before expanding.

Make every link useful

Link from the pillar to the appropriate guide and from each guide back to the broader topic. Add links between supporting pages when the reader naturally needs the next step. Use descriptive anchor text that tells readers where the link goes.

A cluster does not need every page to link to every other page. A podcast repurposing guide can link to fact-checking and internal linking; it does not need unrelated local SEO links simply to make the graph denser.

Keep planning and access honest

Topic Cluster Planner and Topical Authority Planner are included Editor modules. GSEO Briefs is listed as planned as a standalone product. The hub’s module pages distinguish available workflows from products awaiting launch.

Publishing a large cluster does not automatically create authority. Demonstrate expertise, cite evidence, keep content current and remove overlapping pages when one stronger answer serves readers better.

A practical workflow

  1. 1

Define the audience and the pillar’s scope.

  2. 2

Group validated questions into distinct tasks with one URL per task.

  3. 3

Assign evidence, relevant modules and a useful next step to each page.

  4. 4

Link contextually, publish the pillar and maintain a review list.

A worked example

A multilingual content cluster could have one overview, a market research guide, a translation validation guide and a technical language-URL guide. Each supports a different stage. A second page titled “multilingual content SEO tips” needs a genuinely different purpose or should become a section of the overview.

Illustrative example, not a customer result.

Before you publish

  • Supporting pages answer distinct questions.
  • Every guide is reachable from a topic hub.
  • Anchors describe the destination.
  • No page exists only to target a synonym.

Common questions

How many pages should a cluster contain?

Enough to answer the important tasks you can support well. There is no universal number that creates topical authority.

Should every module have a separate article?

Only when it supports a distinct useful answer. A workflow guide can cover several related modules without duplicating their landing pages.
